Zabbaleen is a religious community of Coptic Christians who have served as Cairo's informal garbage collectors for the past 80 years. The largest Zabbaleen settlement in Cairo is Mokattam village, nicknamed "Garbage city” located at the foot of the Mokattam Mountains, surmounted by the Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner, the largest church in the Middle East.
